Lophoscopy is a fundamental branch of criminalistics, as it involves the study and analysis of papillary ridges for the purpose of identifying individuals, and constitutes one of the solid pillars of forensic investigation. This review addresses the morphological fundamentals of fingerprints, their value in individualization, and their great importance in clarifying criminal acts, with an emphasis on fingerprinting and the treatment of such prints at crime scenes. Traditional methods and emerging techniquesfor the correct development, fixation, and lifting of fingerprints were studied, considering the influence of different environmental factors, the quality of the substrate, and the experience of the expert in the interpretation process. Similarly, the presence of new instruments was explored, such as automated identification systems and technologies of great relevance for microscopic visualization, which have provided greater precision and confidence in the identification process. It can be established that, despite the incorporationof new high-resolution digital instruments, the expert's analytical criteria continue to be of great relevance for the validity of the expert's findings. In conclusion, lofoscopy, together with technical knowledge and methodological application, remains relevant today. It is extremely useful in reconstructing events and linking suspects, thereby ensuring certaintyand truth in judicial proceedings. Keywords: Lofoscopy, criminalistics, fingerprinting, identification, investigation.
